Christmas in Ohio

We celebrated Christmas with Keegan's birthfamily with a visit to Ohio last month. Matt couldn't make it because of a business trip (boo work travel!), but Keegan and I made the jaunt and he was a great little travel buddy. I didn't even have to bust out with the DVD player on the ride out!

Grandma Julie hosted us for dinner and made some yummy Cincinnati style chili. Keegan enjoyed another round of opening presents and had a blast with a gingerbread house kit they bought for our visit.

Keegan explains the art of making a gingerbread house

Reaping the rewards - building a gingerbread house is hard work!

Taste testing the candy & gingerbread = SUGAR HIGH!

Giddyup!

Keegan did not get the pink blouse/black pants memo so he opted for the bear PJ's instead

I am very grateful for the relationship that we have with Keegan's birthfamily. An adoption touches many lives - not just the child, the birthparents and adoptive parents, but also the family members that extend from both sides. I am just one part of this adoption circle so can only really speak from my perspective. Keegan's birthfamily have become to us, extended family, and like many of our relationships, we continue to navigate as best we can, through our mutual situations and experiences with love, respect, and care.

Since the time we first considered it, many have asked why we chose an open adoption. I don't think I have ever been very eloquent at explaining why when asked, so I have been searching for a way to put it simply. And it comes down to this:

With the opportunity to have information for Keegan about his adoption and birthfamily, this option felt like the right choice for us. What questions he'll have and when, I'm not sure, but we will let him know his adoption story as the right timing unfolds and will continue to convey how much he's always been loved.

And can a child ever be loved by too many people?
